Politics aside: Historically, a "4 horse race" (on average) is
about all the Triple Crown champs were required to defeat! Therefore, a 4- or 5- horse Belmont race going forward--while it may have a fiscal impact initially, and be less attractive from a wagering standpoint--
is acceptable
as before.
Particularly as a small field size
here (if nowhere else in thoroughbred racing) may be the *least worst* of several admittedly distasteful choices. And indeed may be
the only solution that restores a correct amount of Triple Crown difficulty.
