RIP
Tony Gwynn was the definition of a true contact hitter.
Hard to find a better one.

Met Tony Gwynn briefly in a hotel lobby in Pittsburgh. He was on his way to the airport after a series with the Pirates. I told him I thought he was the best hitter in baseball. Because he was.
RIP.

Been reading some insane stat's on Gywnn's career today, for example he was more likely to hit a double than to strike out. I wonder how many have more career doubles than strike-outs.
Also a doubly sad stat, the only time in his career that he struck out three times in one game, the opposing pitcher was Bob Welch who just passed on last week.

So sad, seemed like a great guy. Heard on MLB that if he didn't get a hit in his next ONE thousand at bats his lifetime batting average would still be .305 That amazes me. RIP......

Heard a great stat tonight during the Phillies game... Gwynn went an entire season and used the same bat... It never broke.... It ended up breaking the following season during spring training and he said he almost cried when it did. How the hell can you go an entire season and not break a bat? Thats amazing.

Lots of balls on the sweet spot!
His numbers were incredible and from all accounts he was too. His impression of Rickey Henderson was hysterical too!

I'd love to hear a comprehensive breakdown of Tony's .394 vs Williams .406
Williams played in an era where pitchers pitched complete games, so he saw the same pitcher 3 and 4 times probably, not sure if Tony didnt see more relief pitching.
Also, Williams hit in Fenway, and that's a hitters park, so there's a "Curve" that Boston players normally have, its why nobody from Oakland can win the batting title, too much foul ground.
Tony's .394 might have been the actual greatest season if you factor in all the ballpark adjustments and era adjustments. But, i don't know for sure, but it would be interesting to see an article like this.

Many believe he would have hit .400 except for the strike. I've always considered him better than Williams.

Today's young players have no idea to how to hit like Gwynn. Trying to jerk everything out of the park, most don't know how to use the whole field. Just nobody nowadays like a Gwynn, Carew or Boggs.
