Then the school is run by idiots.
That's like builing a fence around three sides of your yard and wondering where your dog went.
NO SECURITY IN PLACE AT THAT PLACE.
PARENTS SHOULS SUE.

Better question is how a 17-year-old was in possession of a shotgun, handgun and ammunition.
In Iowa it’s 18 for long guns and 21 for handguns…ammo respectively.
I’m betting he got it from the home. In which case the parent/s should be jailed as well.

That's about every school in Middle America. They may lock doors during day to one entrance open but how controlled schools are in urban areas NY and CA is NOT the norm
I do agree school security should be much tougher thru out USA

My dad had an arsenal in one of the master bedroom closets and I had fired guns from the age of 7. If I went in there without permission I would not be here to type this post. Holding parents responsible for the actions of a teenager you can't give an ass wiping to is ridiculous. Even if locked in a safe
a 17 year old would know the parents probably had the combination written down somewhere. My dad's when he later got a safe was in the address book that was in a kitchen drawer. It was under the name Whitey and written like a phone number with an extra digit in front. That was detective work after he died suddenly without telling my step mother the combination. It pretty much just had handguns and ammo in it.

Why look for anything else when you can just blame "guns".

A big part of root cause traces back to all of the above.
But if I can make a wild ass guess, starting at least 15 years ago:
Our Fed.gov alphabet agencies, k through 12 schools, colleges and universities, social and mainstream media companies, ngo's, etc. have been heavily invested in seizing power for themselves by taxing the shit out of, gaslighting the shit out of, allowing crime in our cities to go unchecked, isolating, dividing, canceling, locking down, masking, vaccine mandating, censoring, attempting to control our every thought, and making life miserable in general for as many of the non elites among us as possible.
Everything they are doing, especially over the last few years, appears designed to create a misery index with an upward sloping exponential curve.
Imo, we are witnessing a predictable result of their efforts.
One thing we don't have at this point is a shortage of weak minded unfulfilled individuals bordering on the brink.
Alas and Alack,
When they crack,
They don't curl up on the floor.
They go out the door,
Act out in the worst possible way.
Call it a gun problem. So easy to say.
No. Root cause. So easy to see,
Call it Government. Induced. Misery.
