JAT got jostled a bit at the break and then looked like he wanted no part of that rumble. He seemed to check out mentally after that, just kind of going with the motions, until he encountered more traffic around the far turn and just quit.

However, the biggest disappointment was the chalk Fierceness (with his towering Beyers) who got a relatively clean trip and chucked it at the 1/4 pole with no real excuse.

I used him because I thought the track might be slightly tilted towards being up close early and he figured to have better position than the horses I liked better. I’m not at all surprised he didn’t run well, but I am surprised he ran that poorly.

He got pretty buried by two waves of compression toward the rail caused by to his outside. Pretty forgivable. Well worth considering next out I reckon with that glaring last place finish dampening his odds, maybe even the race after that if he just needs one next out to get his confidence back.

That is what happens when you go into the Derby with a lightly raced horse who isn't battle tested. You need a perfect trip where the horse doesn't encounter any trouble. Justify and Mage had dream trips with just three starts and had no trouble at any point.
