I wanted to acknowledge Hewitts, a 9yo gelding by Concerto and earner of over $400K, who fractured his femur after unseating his rider on the training track this past Saturday @BEL, and was euthanized.

Polecat, a 2yo colt by First Samurai, and Poppo, a 2yo colt by Smart Strike also broke down Saturday while training at BEL, and were euthanized.

Hewitts was no superstar, but he was a brawler...I swear he once ran in the WO Mile.
Sad news

The Bet Big gelding loved to come from behind from way off the pace in Zenyatta-type fashion, and his consistency was remarkable. Three-time winner of the Arlington Sprint Handicap, two-time winner of the Pheonix at Keeneland, two-time winner of the Aristides, Holiday Cheer, Marfa and Don Bernhardt stakes. He made his way to the Breeders' Cup Sprint three times, placing 3rd twice. His final victory came at 10 years of age, when he romped by 7 and 1/4 lengths over a sloppy track in a $100k AOC at CD. He is trainer Paul J. Mcgee's most accomplished horse ever according to Equibase.com. He attracted a wide range of talented jocks over his 7 years of racing, from Pat Day to Francisco Torres to Calvin Borel. He spent his retirement in relaxation at Hermitage farm in Louisville, KY. 1992-2012

A true hard knocker, Hewitts made over 400k in over 50 starts. I see he won at the beginning of October at Delaware Park for 5k claimers. I remember him quite well from his time on the So. Cal circuit. RIP Hewitts

For anyone who follows the state-bred allowances, this one really hurts. This guy has just been a mainstay in those races in recent years; five of his ten career wins came in the NYbred allowances.
He was both endearing and enduring: had 11 starts @7yo and 10 starts as a 6yo. These years followed an interesting progression: started twice as a 2yo, three times as a 3yo, 4 times as a 4yo, and 5 times as a 5yo.
RIP, Driven By Solar.
