An observation
Judging from posts on various threads dealing with the debt ceiling and the economy, it would seem that most members of this forum are conservatives. But we can pretty safely assume they a all horse-players. That would seem to indicate that horse-players tend to be conservatives, which I find counter intuitive.

I am a liberal and a gambler. But I don't find it surprising at all that a lot of the poster here are conservative. The handicappers who post here generally think of themselves as businessmen, not as gamblers. The majority of businessmen are fiscal conservatives.

Actually, I think most on this board are older and people become more conservative with age in general.

One of my favorite sayings is: "I used to be a liberal. Then I grew up!" And in reality, personal responsibility is definitely a conservative trait. To those who would argue that, I ask:
When was the last time you saw a conservative throw a pie at someone?
When was the last time you saw a conservative carrying a sign encouraging the murder of a US president?
When was the last time you saw a conservative deliberately destroying property?
When was the last time you saw a conservative condoning terrorism against the USA?
When was the last time you saw a conservative shut down opposing speech?
When was the last time you saw a conservative throw glitter at someone?

I have seen people who claim to be conservatives do all of these things in the last year except the throwing of a pie and the throwing of glitter.I never seen anyone throw glitter except as part of a stage show. The last time I saw I a pie in the face was by a comedian at Murdoch trying to publicity. Not funny. The second to last time I saw a pie put in the face was by a someone to guest of honor at retirement party. The person getting the pie thought it very funny and still jokes about it.

But we are moving off the topic of why so many of the posters on this board are conservative. As a former at least moderately conservative who became a liberal because the policies of Reagan did to farmer friends of mine. I really would like to hear of why former liberals became conservatives.

Robert, back in the day when "law and order" was the conservative mantra, the stock answer was "they were mugged."

Is there a checkbox for disillusioned?
I grew up conservative. I've voted conservative my entire life except for one election. One day I found myself trying to justify against facts to support rhetoric and felt ill. It was like glass breaking, shattering my preconceptions.
It's not like I can stomach the rhetoric from the liberal side. I don't seem to agree with either side. This often gets me labeled conservative by liberals and liberal by conservatives.
I believe that what it takes to get elected these days should disqualify you from the job. Campaign reform gets shot down because the people who decide the rules are the same ones that have to follow them.

campaign finance has been greatly hindered by the Senator who's supposed to represent me, the one who's said many times that "money is speech". That would be Mitch McConnell. McConnell intervened against the McCain-Feingold reform, and he intervened in the Citizens United case last year.
