Aintree festival
Anybody following this?
Alberta's Run looks like a solid 7/2 chance today.

Yeah, I've watched both days. Up a little yesterday, down a little today.
Albertas Run ran well, but was no match for Master Minded.
It's been a great couple of day's of racing.
For those betting the Grand National tomorrow (going to back Silver By Nature) be advised that the "field" bet is now horses 24-40, not 20-40.

Yes, very impressive winner Masterminded. Being aimed at the King George now!!
I think I'll be on Oscar Time tomorrow. Though I wouldn't mind if the grey won.

Cool to see Charlie Fenwick on BBC II yesterday (American amateur jockey who won the Grand National with American import Ben Nevis in 1980).

The Grand National...
The traditional English breakfast of black pudding, sausage and carnage.

It looked like one hedge was totally destroyed and it looked like they were putting a horse down near the other hedge they skipped. At the second one they skipped i saw the dreaded curtain being held up just past the hedge.
I think less than 15 finished.

oh they go over the jumps more than once. that makes sense
that might be the most dangerous event on earth, or at least one of them. the carnage.

It was an especially hard race this year. There's a bit of a mini-heatwave in England. The jockey had to jump off the winning horse, they thought the horse was going to get dehydrated.

2 fences were skipped, looks like at the first one the horse was killed instantly as there was just a tarp over the horse, no people around. At Beechers, looks like the horse was put down since the screen was up with people around.

I never did like that race , the Grand National , and after watching a replay of this year's renewal I'm reminded why , horses falling , one braking his back , another his neck , and the winner could hardly hold himself up afterwards .
I'm all for animals earning their keep , but surely these wonderful creatures , Thoroughbreds , deserve better than this.

19 finished. It is the ''Everest'' of Jump racing so to speak and most horses have never run over the distance, nor jumped ''National'' style fences under race conditions before they partake.
This years race seems to have generated more media debate than usual in the UK from an animal welfare point of view.
Watching on television the post race seemed chaotic. Photographers running loose, several horses dismounted on course, the winning jock punching the air and recieving congratulations as he walked into the winners enclosure ON HIS OWN while his horse was left taking oxygen out on the track. I can't remember a more surreal ending to a race before.
However saying that, 'tis probably unlikely to have much, if any, negative effect on the races general popularity next year...

They'll probably have forgotten yes.
I did actually think it looked quite ugly this year, although statistically speaking it wasn't, really.
