They'd have to sprout wings!"
"They're head and head, nose and nose"
"They come down to the line of finish"
"Moving like a winner"
"Poised for the stretch drive"
"is asked for run and he's responding!"
"Hello!"
"they advance into the upper turn" (that's an obscure one... wonder if anyone knows it)
"you better take a look at"
"scraping paint"
"and they're into the stretch!"
"and they zipped the opening quarter"
"is gaining ground!"
"and the last horse away"
"leads to the wire"

None of these are called twice big difference in Durkins call.

All I got from that is I forgot He's a Saros was in the 1987 Classic. I just looked up the chart, longest shot in the field 180-1. I never thought he was entered that high in class. I remember him taking like a duck to water running at Pomona/Fairplex, I think he got 1/2 his lifetime wins there.

Probably the most well know announcer I flat out don't like is Mike Battaglia,
I think I just flat out find his voice annoying.

(Nothing informational there.)

My all-time favorite:
"If you put your money on number 9, take your ticket and stand on line."
(Trevor had so many.)

"Can see them all" tells a story of how compact the field is. I like it.

But I come back to, "It's a difficult job."
I always thought CAN SEE THEM ALL was a way of saying a horse was LAST not a compact field. CAN SEE THEM ALL meaning there are none behind.

"Continue that way..."

It meant Costy was busy watching the Yankee game during a race.

It didn't make the list so maybe it's not relevant. Sometimes I say, "straight and strong". I only use it for huge performances in Graded Stakes. But I've NEVER used it twice in the same race. In fact, never twice on the same day.

I saw the name Joe Alto (RIP) come up in this thread. What a nice, lovely man he was. Called the races at Cal-Expo Harness for many years. Also, the trotters at Los Alamitos and the mixed meet California State Fair in Sacramento.

Some people attribute Joe's catch phrase, on the list, to me.

I must here and now admit I'm guilty of plagiarizing and stealing that call.

When Joe would catch a horse making a big winning move he'd say, " You better take a look at"............

Did you guys know that Dave Johnson's iconic " AND DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME" is copywrited with all proceeds going to charity?

A thousand years ago I was with Larry Collmus in the booth while Costy was calling a race.

He said that very phrase "continue that way" Then turned off the mic. Larry shouted Costy they're still running. The race isn't over!!

Costy said " yeah, yeah, yeah Let em run a while"

Then finished the call.

Pretty simple explanation here.

My understanding is that trademarks are much easier to get a judgement for.

Maybe one of our learned lawyers here can more fully explain it.

Yes, he said it most races, and he also used it take a breather. He was a gem.

Trademarks protect brand names and designations of a product's or service's origin. They are a consumer protection measure so nobody can sell you bogusly labeled goods. They last as long as the trademark is used in commerce.

Copyrights protect writings, pictures, songs, and other literary or artistic creations. They are a measure financially incentivize the creative arts. They last either 95 years or the life of the author + 70 years.
