It's the end of Pimlico as we know it, and the people feel fine

https://www.drf.com/news/its-end-pim...ople-feel-fine

I totally get the concept of "you can't go back ..." but still, I fondly recall my early days as a racing fan heading to Pimlico and maybe after the races walking over to The Pimlico Hotel, a snazzy supper club where all the racing luminaries hung out.

The Pimlico Hotel was chased out of that neighborhood in the mid-1980s by the rampant crime and rundown conditions of adjacent establishments.

Who in their right mind thinks the proposed plan for Maryland racing has one iota of a chance for success?

My bet is that five years from now (May of 2029) that a "new Pimlico" is languishing -- still incomplete and at least 10 times over budget -- with numerous city officials involved in its planning indicted for kickbacks.

Welcome to Baltimore, Hon!

I'm certain that it will be torn down, just as I'm certain that Laurel will be torn down. I'm certain that Laurel will be developed for housing, but I'm not certain that Pimlico will be redeveloped as a racetrack. The underlay is Timonium getting more dates imo.

If 1st racing was in charge of the rebuild I'd agree, but the MD Stadium Authority is running this show. Camden Yards and the surrounding communities were a dump before MSA built the football and baseball stadiums. That area is thriving today. 2 blocks from Pimlico is Whole Foods and some of the best real estate in the city, and mid-Atlantic for that matter. Money was set aside separately from the track rebuild to address the surrounding area.
