When I moderator lives in Oklahoma, you don't get free reign to bash the state without cause.

They use to believe the world was flat and if you went far enough you would fall off the edge. Oklahoma is located a mile beyond that edge and Nebraska is two miles beyond Oklahoma.

Boy, the whole "If you aren't here to condemn Asmussen, then I command you to get the hell out of this thread" attitude sure went south.
I hope the next time some inflammatory topic comes up there will be no bullying attempts to dictate opinion, set narrow parameters of discussion, or censor any fellow poster.
I've got a news flash for you people..there ARE no horse haters on this forum, and few who are callous to the noble steeds. Just separate perspectives from a strong, diverse pool of posters.

More like the end of the end. Racing has been in decline for over a decade.
On the other hand it could be the start of a new beginning. Hope springs eternal.

The irony is that PETA is willing to hurt humans to help other animals, but humans are animals, too.
It is the nature of lions to kill antelope. PETA does not try to stop lions from killing.
Humans eat horses and they train horses. PETA tries to stop humans from eating and training horses.
PETA's actions seem ironic and incongruent to me.
I think someone else mentioned here that PETA is just a bunch of unhappy people who like to make others as miserable as they are. Given their behavior there might be some truth to that.

I agree with that sentiment. The mission statement is praise worthy but the implementation might be called questionable.

Baffert said similar things about when he was a QH trainer. They would bang on the walls of a horse they were racing against the next day in order to keep him from falling sleeping so that he wouldn't want to run.
Sleep deprivation -- interesting tactic.

No problem, I have benefited from many posters links so it was about time I contributed albeit a minor one. Enjoyed your past links as well.

The lasix comment was from a vet, not the assistant trainer. Personally, I'm 100% certain that horses that race without Lasix are at a competitive disadvantage. By allowing it for horses that need it, we are forcing those that don't to use it as well.
|
NY racing was better when they did NOT allow Lasix.
If a horse needs Lasix to prevent bleeding then it is a performance enhancing drug. For that reason alone it should be banned.
It is absurd that some first time starters get Lasix.

Racing is a betting game. The stands are empty because people are betting from home.
I would have to be paid to step foot on a racetrack -- and that includes Millionaire's Row at Churchill Downs on KY Derby day.

I just watched the video. Stevens didn't say which race he used the buzzer in. I got the feeling he was talking about his early days.
I read 380 posts before I watched the video. Frankly, I thought the video was going to be much worse. Anyone who knows anything about racing would know that there was not much new in that video.
It was an "agenda" piece. A real documentary would have shown all sides of racing.
It is hard for me to be persuaded by PETA's position. While watching it, I would recommend that you consider the source.
Race horses are generally very well taken care of. Would it be better for these horses to run wild and be in constant fear of being attacked by some carnivorous stalker and then be torn to bits piece by piece while be devoured alive?
The world is a tough place. That's the reality.
That said, when it comes to the training of racehorses, there is always room for improvement. If the PETA piece raises awareness and horses are treated better then that would be a good thing.
